Many parts of the PhD application process rely heavily on a “hidden curriculum” of knowledge that is less accessible to applicants outside of privileged positions. Before one of my undergraduate mentors pointed it out, I had no idea it was possible to have a PhD that was funded. I was lucky and privileged to receive excellent mentorship on my application process. I am passionate about diversifying academia, which means offering that same knowledge to those outside of typical power structures.
